How to Write an Effective Job Description Tailored to Millennials

Companies seeking to hire talent soon are in a great position if they can tailor their job descriptions to suit more millennials. This generation is one of the largest and happens to be the most educated generation in history. Newsweek reported that in 2015 alone more than 2.9 million entered the workforce with a bachelor’s degree or better. These eager, educated young graduates are also entering the corporate world at a time when unemployment rates are the lowest in seven years. Here are some things to consider when targeting your job descriptions to this generation.

Address Their Needs

When you write a job description geared towards them for your industry, you’re going to have to do a little work. Address the millennials’ needs along with your own. While millennials are the most educated, unfortunately, they are also beginning their working life with the largest student debt load. The potential employer must keep in mind that these young people not only have to pay their day-to-day living expenses, but they also have the stress of making monthly student loan payments. Let them know in the job description that you care about this and know that while they bring a lot to the table, you are willing to do the same.

Include Humor

The millennials grew up in an era where humor is a regular part of advertising and culture. They are attracted to a bit of humor as long it isn’t snarky or crass. Don’t be afraid to work in humor.

Sell Them on the Challenge

Millennials grew up in the fast-paced technological era and are accustomed to multitasking. While many workers of the past were perfectly content doing mundane tasks for hours on end if it paid the bills, millennials thrive on balancing three tasks at once and are only more inspired by a challenge. You should include these aspects in the job description.

Stress the Growth Opportunities

Goldman Sachs, who has aggressively been pursuing millennials, found that 82% are willing to relocate providing the job is right. This generation needs to know where they’re going places and that there is growth potential involved. They are ready to take your company to the next level if you are willing to do the same for them.

Show How You’re Giving Back

This group is more socially conscience than generations past and likes to know they’re part of something bigger and that they are giving back. They’re not just looking for a job, but also a way to improve the world.
